The Region : Bigger Sewer Bills Ahead
Long-delayed repairs on the Los Angeles sewage system will force a hike in monthly service fees to $11.63 by 1992 and require the city to sell $700 million in new bonds, officials said. The repairs are necessary because state and federal authorities have cracked down on the city’s illegal sewage dumping in the ocean. The City Council will consider the recommendation and set the monthly fee to be paid by residents later in the year. In the next 10 years, the city is facing a $2.3-billion bill for repair and new construction on the massive and aging sewer network and the Hyperion sewage treatment plant in Playa Del Rey.
