A Superior Court jury awarded $1.2 million to a Pasadena man who suffered a concussion and a shattered left leg in a bus accident. Attorneys said Royal Johnson, 45, was a passenger on a Southern California Rapid Transit bus May 12, 1981, when it went out of control and smashed into several parked cars on La Brea Avenue near Slauson Avenue. As a result, lawyers said, Johnson required knee surgery and will need future operations and treatment. The driver of the bus originally claimed that the brakes had malfunctioned, but later pleaded no contest to drunk-driving charges.
