Tight end Willie Smith of the University of Miami said Wednesday that he believes he wasn’t picked until the 10th round in Tuesday’s National Football League draft because someone revealed the results of a confidential drug test administered last year by the school.

Smith, Miami’s all-time leading receiver with 114 catches, was projected as an early-round choice but was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 10th round.

Before last football season, he tested positive for an illegal drug in a urinalysis that Miami gives all of its athletes. Smith refused to say what substance was detected in his system but admitted that it was “a major drug.”

Smith said he was reprimanded by Coach Jimmy Johnson. In four subsequent tests, no drugs were found in his system.

“I’ve been the victim of something . . . “ he said. “All I’m saying is something like this must have gotten out for me not to get drafted higher. And only two people knew about it.”

Those two were Johnson and Miami trainer Kevin O’Neill. Smith said Johnson might have leaked the information because he was displeased with Smith for giving up his final year of eligibility to turn pro.

Johnson denied releasing the information.
