UCLA Group Loses Third Bid to Build Shanties on Campus

Share

Members of the student political group Nemesis clashed with UCLA administration officials Tuesday in the group’s third unsuccessful attempt to install shanties on campus to dramatize the group’s anti-totalitarian views, according to spokesman Bob Zirgulis, a UCLA graduate.

Administration officials said the group has not complied with required procedures, but Zirgulis said the group has tried to do so and has been rejected.

Zirgulis said he was ordered off campus for 72 hours by campus police officers.

He said Nemesis members’ First Amendment rights are being violated and that the university is practicing “a double standard” by allowing other groups to protest but not allowing Nemesis to put up its shanties.
