The school board of Indianola, Miss., appointed a black superintendent in a move expected to bring an end to a five-week boycott of white businesses in this predominantly black Delta town. Robert Merritt, a school principal, will replace W.A. Grissom, a white. Willie Spurlock, who led the boycott, said the resignation cleared the way to end the boycott, which caused the closing of three businesses and the temporary shutdown of the schools.
