President Samora Machel said Thursday that a campaign to rid the capital of “parasites” will begin soon and that people who do not produce will be sent to the country.

In a May Day speech, Machel said, “There are more than 200,000 people in Maputo who are nothing more than parasites.”

He said those who perform marginally or not at all will be sent to three southern provinces.

“They will go back to the countryside to produce food,” Machel said. “Only those that are really working will stay in Maputo.”
