San Diego Roundup : Aztec Women Favored to Capture Tennis Crown

San Diego State, with four nationally ranked players, is the favorite to win the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s tennis championships, which start at 9 a.m. today at UC Irvine.

The No. 9 Aztecs (14-10) are led by Monique Javer (ranked 15th), Anne Moeller (No. 23), Cindy MacGregor (No. 31) and Cathy Berry (No. 62). Moeller and Berry are ranked fifth nationally in doubles.

The real fight will be for second place between the University of the Pacific (16-7), Cal State Long Beach (16-9), Hawaii (14-11), UCI (15-14), Las Vegas (10-19), UC Santa Barbara (9-11) and Cal State Fullerton (6-17).

The tournament will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. and the finals will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The U.S. Hot Rod Assn. truck and tractor pull spring championships continue at 8 tonight in the San Diego Sports Arena. Entrants will compete for $50,000 in prize money. Tickets for tonight’s show are $8 and $12, and are $12 and $14 for Saturday’s show, which also begins at 8. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets.

The Drew Gissinger/Audi Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit the San Diego chapter of the American Cancer Society will be Monday at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

Members of the San Diego Chargers who are scheduled to compete include Rolf Benirschke, Eric Sievers, Billy Ray Smith and Ed White. Actor and former Minnesota Viking Ed Marinaro is also expected to play. Gissinger recently retired from the Chargers because of a serious back injury.

For a $250 donation, players will receive 18 holes with a celebrity, buffet lunch, range balls, a tournament gift package and a chance at $7,500 in prizes. Also, former PGA player Phil Rodgers will conduct a clinic.

Registration is at 11:30 a.m., lunch and the clinic begin at noon, a shot gun start is at 1 p.m. and the awards dinner is at 6 p.m. To enter, call 471-0260.

San Diego State’s Associated Students is sponsoring the fifth annual Night Moves Twilight 5K run tonight. The 3.1-mile race begins near Peterson Gym at 7.

Entry fee is $7 for SDSU students and $8 for the general public and includes a post-race party at Monty’s Den in the Aztec Center. Race-day registration will be from 5 to 6:45 p.m. in parking lot K at SDSU. For more information, call 265-6424.

The 16th annual women’s national senior hard-court championships for the 50- and 60-year-old divisions will be at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club next Thursday through Sunday. The Seniors Invitational tournament will be held at the same time.

The U.S. championships will include both singles and doubles. Last year’s 50 singles winner, Dorothy Matthiessen of Pasadena has entered again this year and will team with 1985 singles semifinalist Julie Hayward of Newport Beach in the doubles.

The Seniors Invitational will feature singles and doubles in the women’s 70 and 75 divisions and the men’s 60, 65, 70 and 75 divisions.

San Diego resident Rudy Regalado, a sophomore who led the University of Redlands to its sixth straight conference title, has been named golfer of the year by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Golfers at Redlands have won the award since 1981.

Rudy’s brother, Gary, a senior at Redlands, was named to the conference’s first team.

Rudy shot 144 for 36 holes to win the SCIAC tournament. He also received the Jesse Clark Award for sportsmanship.
