Chuck Cottier was a good-field, no-hit player in nine major league seasons (1959-65, 68-69) as a utility infielder. Cottier played only 580 games, getting 348 hits in 1,584 at-bats for a .220 average. He struck out 248 times, or once for every six at-bats.

Now Cottier, as manager of the Seattle Mariners, is watching his batters strike out at a pace this season that would establish a major league record.

In 24 games, the Mariners have struck out 230 times in 779 at-bats, projecting to 1,555 over 162 games, which would break the 1968 New York Mets’ record of 1,203.

Last week was a particularly frustrating week for Mariner batters:

--Tuesday night at Boston, Red Sox right-hander Roger Clemens struck out 20 Mariners to set a major league nine-inning record. The Mariners, with 12 strikeouts against Oakland Sunday, set a major league record of 32 in consecutive games.

--Wednesday night at Boston, Mariner batters struck out 16 times against three Red Sox pitchers. Reliever Bob Stanley struck out both batters he faced with the bases loaded in the ninth inning as the Mariners lost their fifth straight game, 9-4.
