Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres told his Cabinet that Israel has maintained contact with Jordan’s King Hussein through the United States “for a long time” in an attempt to improve prospects for Mideast peace. But a Cabinet source said that an imminent breakthrough in peace efforts is unlikely. A Cabinet communique said Peres’ statement was intended to clarify “incorrect publications,” an apparent reference to foreign reports saying a breakthrough in peace efforts was imminent.
