A unit of presumed leftist guerrillas killed a Peruvian rear admiral today in a grenade attack outside the navy officer’s home, Peru’s official news agency Andina said.

Rear Adm. Carlos Ponce de Leon Canessa died shortly after the suspects, two women and three men, tossed hand grenades at his car outside his home at 8:15 a.m. today, media reports said. No rebel group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Canessa, the highest-ranking military officer killed during six years of guerrilla war in Peru.
