“Original Golden Hits, Vol. 1.” Johnny Cash. Bellaphon. Despite all that’s been written about such contemporary standouts as Willie, Waylon and Loretta, no one since Hank Williams has done more than Cash to strengthen country music--artistically and commercially. This especially bright-sounding 16-song collection, manufactured in Japan, doesn’t document all of his influence and importance, but the late ‘50s Sun recordings--signature tracks such as “Folsom Prison Blues” and country-rock experiments like “Home of the Blues”--serve as an enticing introduction. 1/2
