The Soviet Union tried but failed to persuade Turkey not to allow a performance in Istanbul this week by Soviet-born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said today.

Nureyev is directing and playing the male lead in an Istanbul State Opera and Ballet production of Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty,” which opened on Sunday. Moscow opposed Nureyev’s participation because he is a defector.
