Yang Dezhi, China’s armed forces chief of staff, met with Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger at the Pentagon. Yang is heading the highest-ranking military mission to visit the United States since the thaw in relations between the two nations in the 1970s. The 16-day visit will include tours of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps installations. Yang is expected to discuss with Weinberger the accelerating pace of proposed U.S. arms sales to China.
