Dummy Bomb Falls on Belgian House; Ban Now in Effect
The Belgian air force said Tuesday that dummy bombs no longer will be dropped at a practice range because one of them--dropped by a U.S. plane--hit a civilian’s house the day before.
The dummy bomb pierced the roof of Luigi Uva’s home and ricocheted through the kitchen and several other rooms, coming to rest in the attic. No one was injured.
“To avoid any future accidents, the air force has prohibited practice of this sort of exercise,” an air force statement said.
The 25-pound practice bomb was dropped Monday by a U.S. Air Force F-16 at the Helchteren practice range near the northeast Belgian town of Hasselt just south of the Dutch border. Uva’s house is near the range.
