Offensive tackle Marvin Powell, who staged a long holdout last summer and then played poorly during the season, was placed on waivers Tuesday by the New York Jets.

Powell missed training camp last year in a contract dispute, then returned following the first game. While the Jets went on to an 11-5 record and a wild-card playoff berth, Powell and his fellow offensive linemen allowed 62 sacks.

Last week, Powell was elected president of the NFL Players Assn. The Jets took offensive linemen Mike Haight and Doug Williams on the first two rounds of the National Football League draft last week. They said they had attempted to trade Powell but had been unable to work out a deal for the eight-year veteran from USC.
