One of the new scholarships would be in the name of SADD and the other in the name of Debbie Slemmons, an Orange Coast student who was fatally injured in a wreck attributed to a drunk driver.

The two organizations are sponsoring 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs to be begin at 8 a.m. May 17 in William R. Mason Park in Irvine. The entry fee is $10 for the race, a T-shirt and breakfast, and $7 for the race and breakfast only. Entry blanks are available at most sports stores catering to runners, at the Associated Students office on campus or by calling (714) 432-5507 and requesting that a form be mailed. Registration on the day of the race will begin at 7:15 a.m.

“There is already a scholarship in the name of Debbie Slemmons, but this event will raise money to make that a perpetual scholarship,” said Barbara Newbern, special programs coordinator for the Associated Students. She said that any Orange Coast student, regardless of major, may apply for the SADD or Debbie Slemmons scholarships.
