40 on Ferry Drown; Some Stay Afloat on Drums
United Press International
NEW DELHI —
A ferryboat crossing the Ganges River capsized, killing at least 40 people, the Press Trust of India reported Wednesday. Some passengers in a musical band survived by clinging to drums.
The news agency quoted officials as saying the strong current and wind caused the boat to overturn near the city of Patna, almost 600 miles east of New Delhi.
The bandsmen had been accompanying a wedding party. They kept afloat using their drums for flotation until a rescue party reached them, the Indian news agency said.
