NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS : CSUN’s Unseeded Conn Upsets Top-Seeded Bokelund in 3 Sets
Unseeded Missy Conn of Cal State Northridge upset top-seeded Christina Bokelund of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, Wednesday in the second round of the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships at CSUN.
“I didn’t make very many mistakes,” said Conn, a junior from Westlake High whose patient, almost passive style is described by Southern Illinois Coach Bob Meyers as a “push” game.
“She’s more aggressive,” Conn said of Bokelund, a freshman from Goteborg, Sweden. “She hits a hard, flat ball. They might call it a push game, but I didn’t have to do much with it because with her pace, all I had to do was drop my racket and it would go back.
“I didn’t want to play her game by hitting it hard back and forth because she’d beat me.”
Conn will meet sixth-seeded Mary Holycross of Cal Poly Pomona in a quarterfinal match today at 9 a.m.
