Woodland Hills-based Dataproducts, the nation’s largest independent maker of computer printers, reported earnings of $5.5 million for the fourth quarter ended March 29, up 113% from the same period last year. Dataproducts attributed the improvement to cost-cutting measures. For the fiscal year, however, the company posted a $26.8-million loss, a reversal from a profit of $27.7 million the year before. The loss stemmed mainly from writeoffs taken because of plant closings, job cutbacks and the elimination of two lines of printers during the first two quarters of its fiscal year.
