Dolphin Center Stephenson Played Half of Season With Stress Fracture in His Leg
Three-time All-Pro center Dwight Stephenson of the Miami Dolphins played about half of the 1985 season with a stress fracture in his right leg, a team physical revealed Thursday.
A stress fracture was diagnosed below the right knee, Stephenson said, in an area where he first noticed pain in the middle of the season. The six-year veteran from Alabama started every game despite the injury.
“It bothered me during the season, but I just thought it was sore,” Stephenson said.
Stephenson will miss the rest of the team’s off-season mini-camp, and he has been told not to put any stress on the leg for from four to six weeks.
Coach Don Shula said he’s sure that Stephenson will be ready when training camp opens this summer.
