San Diego Prep Track Roundup : Boggess Extends His Lead in Shotput

Share

Brian Boggess hasn’t had much competition in San Diego County this year. The thrower from El Capitan High School has the top mark in the discus (183-9) by more than 23 feet. Thursday, he increased his lead in the shotput.

For the third week in a row, Boggess bettered his own San Diego County best in the shotput. He became the first California prep athlete to throw farther than 60 feet this season, throwing 60-1 1/2. El Capitan Coach Dick Wilkins said Boggess could go even farther.

“He threw 61-2 in practice the day before,” said Wilkins, whose team lost to Monte Vista, 83-53. “He’s been gradually improving, and very consistent. I think he’s ready to really unload one.”

Earlier in the season, Boggess threw well in practice but couldn’t throw as far in meets. Wilkins said Boggess is starting to relax now.

“He’s much better about relaxing in the ring, and that’s enabled him to be consistent,” Wilkins said. “He’s getting the hang of it. He’s doing the things that he needs to do to have a really good throw.”

Boggess also won the discus with a throw of 177-6.

In other San Diego County meets:

Vista 83, Fallbrook 53--Host Vista won the Palomar League with the victory as both teams entered the meet with undefeated records. Vista’s Brian Lockwood won the 110 high hurdles (15.3) and 300 intermediate hurdles (40.5). Vista’s Eric Robinson won the 200 (22.1). For Fallbrook, Steve Stephen won the shotput with a throw of 51-6 3/4.

Mount Carmel 69, Poway 67--Mount Carmel’s John Quintanella outsprinted Poway’s Bill Dunker to win the 800 meters in 1:59.0, one-tenth faster than Dunker. The meet came down to the triple jump, but Poway’s best jumper, John Ashworth, who won the long jump at 22-0, had to miss the event because of a soccer tryout. Mount Carmel won the event. Poway’s Dustin Seale ran a fast 49.1 to win the 400 meters.

GIRLS Grossmont 88, Santana 39--Dana Copeland won the 110 low hurdles (15.5), the 330 low hurdles (51.1) and the 100 meters (13.3), but they may have been her last races of the year. Grossmont Coach Lynn Cole said Copeland, one of the best hurdlers in San Diego the last two years, will be academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. Copeland is also a member of the Foothiller’s mile relay team, one of the best in the county. Grossmont was considered one of the top five contenders for the section title, but those chances are diminished without Copeland.

Point Loma 73, Mira Mesa 54--Michelle Collum ran a 14.3 in the 110 low hurdles, the second-fastest time in the county this season. Collum also won the 330 low hurdles. In both races she barely defeated Mira Mesa’s Darla Vaughn.
