John Henry, Now Fit, Gets Back in Training
John Henry, two-time Horse of the Year who retired last July with record earnings of $6,597,947, arrived at Hollywood Park Saturday to return to training and make a comeback at the age of 11.
“He’s very happy,” longtime groom Jose Mercado said. “His condition is perfect.”
Problems with John Henry’s right foreleg prompted owner Sam Rubin to retire the gelding last summer. However, Rubin reports the horse is now 100% sound.
“He’s telling us he wants to race,” Rubin said.
Trainer Ron McAnally said he would be very patient with John Henry and would campaign him only when completely fit.
