Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak made a surprise visit to Jordan on Sunday and met King Hussein at the Red Sea port of Aqaba.

Mubarak returned to Egypt later in the day. An official in the presidential party, contacted by telephone from Amman, would give no details of the talks.

Mubarak and King Hussein, who last met in Cairo in March, have exchanged frequent visits for consultations since September, 1984, when Jordan restored ties with Egypt that were severed over the Cairo government’s 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
