UCLA Will Initiate Drug Program

UCLA will initiate a drug education and testing program for athletes this summer, Athletic Director Peter Dalis said in a letter to be mailed to parents of athletes.

“In establishing a list of banned substances, we tried to keep it similar to the International Olympic Committee’s list,” said Dr. Gerald Finerman, who will be in charge of the testing.

Every UCLA team member will be required to take the test during regularly scheduled preseason physical examinations.

Athletes who test positive initially will be re-tested along with several team members on a random basis to provide confidentiality.

A positive second test will require mandatory participation in counseling. A third positive test will result in immediate suspension from the team.
