Castration and Rape

Share

I read Ruth Macklin’s article (Editorial Pages, April 22), “Castration for Sex Offenders? It’s Wrong.” I agree with Macklin when she says, “Rape should be viewed more as an act of aggression or hostility than as an expression of uncontrolled sexual desire.”

A rapist should be dealt with from a mental standpoint. When men rape, it is, mostly, because of a very sick mental problem, not because of the desire to satisfy their hormones.

In my early years and being a victim (of rape), I can tell you that my first impression on rapists was: “The death penalty isn’t enough punishment to pay back for what they did.” I still feel that way, but I also have a better understanding of why rapists do what they do.

Therefore, I say castration is not the answer.

If castration is used on rapists, they (the rapists) might get even more sick, and their anger will lead to a more dangerous crime, like murder. What would you do then, cut off their arms and hands so they won’t murder again? Think about it.
