Frank Gifford has decided to accept the switch from play-by-play announcer to commentator on “Monday Night Football” and remain with ABC Sports.

Earlier this year, Joe Namath was fired by ABC as an analyst on NFL games, and O.J. Simpson was offered a switch to college football by the network. Only Gifford was asked to return to the program, but to do color, with Al Michaels being given the play-by-play assignment.

Gifford interviewed with CBS for its morning news show but decided to stay with ABC, where he has worked for 16 years. Simpson, meanwhile, has yet to announce whether he will make the change to college football or accept an offer from CBS to join its NFL coverage.
