Federal Judge Orders Yonkers to Integrate Schools by Fall 1987

NEW YORK — Yonkers officials must seek complete integration in their 19,000-student school system by September, 1987, using forced busing and other mandatory measures if voluntary efforts fail, a federal judge has ruled.
U.S. District Judge Leonard B. Sand, who said last November that Yonkers was guilty of discrimination in both its housing and school policies, gave the school district his final terms Tuesday night.
He rejected pleas for four years to achieve integration, and also refused to adopt a more lenient 90% integration standard advocated by the school board.
