S. Korea Campus Unrest Grows
Violence spread to at least 30 universities across South Korea today, three days before the anniversary of the start of the May, 1980, uprising at Kwangju, student sources and news reports said.
Between 3,000 and 4,000 students of the Chonnam National University in Kwangju, about 200 miles south of Seoul, held memorial services for the estimated 190 people who died in the uprising. The crowd then clashed with riot police on campus, and at least two students were injured, student sources said. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries in the clashes at the other universities.
