Edwin A. Greenup, whose father’s trial on charges that he molested seven elementary-school girls ended in a hung jury Wednesday, was sentenced to four years and three months in state prison Thursday for the attempted kidnaping and molestation of a 3-year-old Northridge girl.

Santa Monica Superior Court Judge David D. Perez also ordered that Greenup, 29, of Granada Hills undergo 3 1/2 years of psychiatric therapy and that he avoid using alcohol or drugs after his release from prison.

Greenup could have received a maximum sentence of seven years, Deputy Dist. Atty. Susan Lasicka said.

“There is no argument from the family,” Greenup’s attorney, Edward L. Masry, said after the sentencing.

Convicted in November

Greenup was convicted in November of one charge of attempted kidnaping and one charge of child molesting. Witnesses at Greenup’s non-jury trial said they saw him take the 3-year-old girl by the hand to a laundry room in the rear of a Northridge apartment and molest her.

Greenup admitted during the trial that he had exposed himself to the girl and another 8-year-old girl in the Aug. 15 incident but denied touching either of them.

Perez recommended that Greenup serve his sentence in a state prison medical facility. In imposing the sentence, the judge said a prison term alone would not cure Greenup’s problem.

Greenup’s attorney asked the judge to allow his client to go immediately to a prison medical facility rather than be housed with other inmates in the weeks before his transfer to state prison because Greenup, he said, has received death threats.

Parole Eligibility

Perez said he would make that recommendation to the state Board of Corrections.

Greenup will be eligible for parole in about a year, Lasicka said.

Jurors in the trial of Greenup’s father, Campbell Hugh Greenup, the owner of a private Northridge elementary school, announced Wednesday that they were hopelessly deadlocked on 19 charges that Campbell Hugh Greenup fondled seven girl pupils from 1978 to 1984.

Earlier this week, the jury voted to acquit Greenup, 59, on two other child-abuse charges.
