Cardinal Jaime Sin, who as archbishop of Manila helped unite the opposition to deposed Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos, told a Los Angeles news conference that “only God can forgive” Marcos for the political and financial damage he did to the country. “I forgive him, but whether God will forgive, I don’t know,” Sin said. Despite the problems faced by President Corazon Aquino, a political novice, Sin said he was very pleased. “I think we need a housewife to manage our affairs. . . . She is very thrifty.”
