Ken Oberkfell is trying to prove to Manager Chuck Tanner that he belongs in the Atlanta Braves’ lineup every day.

On Thursday, he made a pretty good case for himself.

Oberkfell, a left-handed hitter who rarely plays against left-handed pitchers, hit a three-run homer off left-hander Dan Schatzeder with two out in the 10th inning to give the Braves a 7-4 victory over the Expos at Montreal.

“I’m certainly not a home-run hitter, but that one came at an opportune time,” said Oberkfell. “You don’t expect to see me hit home runs. I don’t like sitting on the bench and I’m batting .400 against left-handers.

“I hope Chuck noticed I hit that homer off a lefty. I want to play every day.”

Oberkfell’s blast scored Dale Murphy, who had singled, and Bob Horner, who had walked, and made a winner of Bruce Sutter (2-0). Jeff Dedmon pitched the 10th for Atlanta to gain his second save.

Mitch Webster’s two-out, two-run bloop double allowed Montreal to tie the score, 4-4, in the ninth.

New York 6, Houston 2--Ron Darling scattered eight hits in eight innings, and Danny Heep hit a two-run homer to lead the Mets at Houston. Darling is 4-0.

Cincinnati 6, Philadelphia 5--Ron Oester hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning at Philadelphia to give the Reds the victory. Reliever Ron Robinson (3-0), who allowed only one hit in three innings, got the win.
