John Henry’s Return Has Them Stirring

Share

I feel I must respond to Ann-Marie Chamberlain’s letter concerning Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rubin and their remarkable John Henry. It is not greed, but a love of the sport and, most of all, a love of the gelding that is prompting them to put John Henry back in training. The fierce competitor is obviously not happy in retirement and has been deemed fit enough to stand training. It is important to realize that the decision to train is not the same as the decision to race, which will only be made after he begins training.

As to greed, the Rubins will be out of pocket the considerable expense of daily training bills against the likelihood of no return at all from racing revenues.
