Customs policemen cannot wear earrings while on duty, a West German court has ruled.

The court rejected Friday the contention of a customs policeman that his superior’s refusal to allow him to wear a silver earring in one ear violated Article 2 of the West German constitution, which says everyone has the right to freely develop his personality.

He said his superior had called the earring “unsuitable and laughable.”

The court said a customs policeman often gives foreigners their first impression of the country and wearing an earring would endanger this representation function.
