Laguna Niguel : Amnesty for Overdue Traffic Tickets Begins

Share

Beginning today about 5,000 motorists who have been “wandering around out there waiting to get popped” for failure to appear in South County Municipal Court will be offered a break if they decide to show up in court within the next 30 days to clear up traffic tickets.

Presiding Judge Pamela L. Iles said the amnesty will be offered until June 19.

“We want them to come in, and the sooner the better, and we’ll dismiss the failure to appear charge, which usually carries a terribly big fine,” Iles said.

The judge said that only the basic charge will be considered when the motorists appear in court. However, she said the program may be canceled if the signs are not encouraging the first few days.

Iles said the amnesty program has been successful in other court jurisdictions, but this is the first the time it is being offered in South County Municipal Court in Laguna Niguel.

“We just want everybody to come in and surrender,” Iles said.
