China Rescues Relics

PEKING —
A weeklong sweep by police in the ancient Chinese city of Xian netted more than 24,000 cultural relics being illegally offered for sale by vendors, the People’s Daily newspaper reported Sunday. Antiques can be purchased from street hawkers in several Chinese cities. However, it is illegal to take items out of the country without government permission.
