Sudan Rebel Rocket Kills a Governor
Eight people, including a provincial governor, were killed Sunday when a rebel rocket shot down their plane at the southern Sudanese town of Rumbek, an army statement said.
The victims were identified as the governor of the Lakes province, a representative of the Sudanese national relief agency, three army officers and three noncommissioned officers.
Rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army have been conducting a long war for regional autonomy against government troops in the south.
The Sudanese news agency quoted military headquarters sources as saying that the plane was downed with a SAM-7 missile.
