Two teen-agers who survived a mountain climbing tragedy on Mt. Hood gained strength--but one had lost both his legs and the other was too “fragile” emotionally to be told their nine companions were dead. Giles Thompson, 16, remained in critical but stable condition at Providence Hospital in Portland, Ore., following surgery Sunday night in which both his frostbitten legs were amputated below the knee. The condition of Brinton Clark, 16, was upgraded from critical to serious after she was taken off a respirator. Nine students and faculty members from the Oregon Episcopal School perished last week in the mountain incident.
