Police End 1st Finnish Hijacking

Police overpowered Finland’s first hijacker less than three hours after he took over a Finnair DC-9 airliner on a domestic flight today at Oulu Airport in northwestern Finland, officials said.

Juha Pajunen, an air traffic controller, said no shots were fired as the unidentified man, a Finnish national, was subdued. The hijacker, who brandished a weapon, had released all 95 passengers but had taken the two pilots and three stewardesses hostage. Finnish radio said the man was mentally ill and was protesting bad conditions at mental hospitals in the nation.
