San Diegans Join in Anti-Drug Rally
A busload of program workers and clients from San Diego participated in a rally on the state Capitol’s west lawn Tuesday to call attention to the problem of drug abuse and to lobby for more state funding for alcohol and drug abuse problems.
Several thousand demonstrators, many of them youngsters with banners and placards, attended.
The San Diego group, organized by county health officials, said they wanted to show support for a bill by Sen. John Seymour (R-Anaheim) that would increase funding for substance abuse programs in San Diego and several other counties where state funding is below the average.
Gov. George Deukmejian vetoed a similar bill last year.
Besides Seymour, legislators attending the rally included Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco), Sen. Barry Keene (D-Benicia), and Assemblymen Steve Clute (D-Riverside), Sam Farr (D-Carmel) and Don Rogers (R-Bakersfield).
The rally was organized by a group that calls itself the Statewide Coalition of Alcohol and Drug Programs, made up primarily of operators of county and contract drug abuse programs.
