Schools Seek $1 for Each Student to Aid Library

A major effort to help raise money to replace books in the fire-damaged Central Library has been adopted by the Los Angeles Board of Education.

“I believe that it is incumbent upon us as a district to become intensely involved in the rebuilding of our library,” schools Supt. Harry Handler told a board meeting Monday.

The goal by June 30, Handler said, would be a $1 contribution for each student, kindergarten through adult school, which would amount to $708,760. Handler also called on private and parochial schools to undertake a similar effort.
