Pomona : Water Purification Test
A new water purification process that could eventually reduce the East San Gabriel Valley’s dependence on imported water by 20% will be implemented next month, officials for the Three Valleys Municipal Water District in Pomona have announced.
The district, which supplies water to distributors in 15 San Gabriel Valley cities, including Pomona, Azusa, Glendora, Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Covina, West Covina, Industry and La Puente, will be the first agency in the United States to test the decontamination process, said William Koch, vice president of the water district.
The $273,000 system, which is being imported from the Netherlands, will be used to purify many of the nitrate-contaminated wells that have been taken out of service in the east valley, Koch said. While the new technology already has been shown to work in Europe, he said, the agency will study the purification system for two years to determine its cost-effectiveness. If the process is successful, the purified water will be about 25% cheaper than water imported from the Central Valley or the Colorado River, Koch said.
