Santa Fe Springs : Boulevard Business Study

Share

A $30,000 market study to determine the economic feasibility of certain commercial developments along Washington Boulevard has been authorized by the City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency.

The city has included several boulevard commercial establishments in the Washington Boulevard Redevelopment Project, which is expected to be adopted by July, said James Turba, assistant to director of planning and development.

Turba said the study will help city officials decide “whether the market dictates more commercial development” along Washington. The city wants to upgrade run-down shopping areas, especially the Whittier Downs Mall, on Washington Boulevard, which have been in decline.

Besides the retail shopping center, Turba said, the city is proposing to build smaller mini-malls along the street, which has the highest traffic volume in the city. A staff report said the study will explore alternatives for these commercial areas--upgrading them or replacing them with other developments, including offices and hotels.
