Sex-Case Sentence : Judge Orders Ex-Teacher to Avoid Boys

The former Simi Valley teacher who pleaded guilty to three counts of oral copulation with a 16-year-old student was banned Wednesday from associating with boys under 18 unless there is a responsible adult present. She also was made subject to police visits--without search warrants--to ensure that she is not consorting with boys.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles Robert McGrath also ordered Carol Dougherty to serve five years’ probation, to perform 200 hours of community service work and to continue receiving psychological counseling.

Dougherty on April 21 accepted a plea-bargain offer from the Ventura County district attorney’s office that called for making the guilty pleas in exchange for the dropping of 12 other counts of oral copulation with a minor and child annoyance.

Resigns Teaching Post

Dougherty, 44, estranged wife of the chairman of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, James Dougherty, resigned as an English teacher Dec. 20 after officials of the Simi Valley Unified School District learned of her sexual affair with a boy student of hers in November and December.

“She’s upset and depressed, but relieved that it’s over and she won’t go to jail,” said Leslie F. Nadasi, Dougherty’s lawyer.

Nadasi said that Dougherty, who is unemployed, will probably spend her community service time on secretarial and housekeeping assignments, beginning in June.
