A former high school English teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old male student was sentenced to five years’ probation. Her voice breaking, Carol Dougherty, 44, who had taught at Royal High School in Simi Valley, implored Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles McGrath to allow her to vote for her estranged husband, county Supervisor James Dougherty, who is up for reelection. However, McGrath said he could not grant an exception to the law barring convicted felons from voting. Carol Dougherty was arrested after the boy’s mother found letters the teacher had written to him and told police.
