Commission Finds Anaheim Mayor Made False Statement

Share

The county Fair Campaign Practices Commission found Thursday that Anaheim Mayor Donald R. Roth made a false and misleading statement by claiming that he was “the only candidate for supervisor from Anaheim” in a campaign letter.

Manuel P. Mendez, an Anaheim resident for more than 20 years, and former Rep. Jerry M. Patterson, who moved to the city in January, are running against Roth for the supervisor’s seat in a district that includes Anaheim, Orange, Buena Park and La Palma.

The fourth candidate in the June 3 primary election is Orange Mayor James Beam.

Patterson and Mendez last week filed written complaints about Roth’s letter and appeared personally before the commission Thursday night.

The commission also found that a letter written on behalf of Beam falsely stated there were only three candidates in the race: Beam, Roth and Patterson.

The commission, which has little power to discipline candidates, said it would issue press releases on both of its findings.
