San Diego Roundup : World-Class Field Enters Carlsbad 5K

A world-class field has entered the Carlsbad 5-kilometer road race June 1. The race will feature the top three road racers in the world this year, Mexican Arturo Barrios and Kenyans Michael Musyoki and Peter Koech.

Barrios set a world best for a 10K on a loop course with a time of 27 minutes, 41 seconds at the American Continental race. Musyoki won the Buick 10K here in March and was the silver medalist in the 10,000 meters in the 1984 Olympics. Koech was second in the Buick 10K.

Suleiman Nyambui, Yobes Ondiecki and Steve Scott of Fallbrook also have entered. Joan Benoit, winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon, will lead the women’s field.

The race is offering $21,000 in prize money, the largest purse offered for a foot race in San Diego County and the largest anywhere for a 5K, according to race director Tom Murphy.

The open race begins at 7:45 a.m. and the invitational begins at 9 a.m. For more information call, 483-9501.

The San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer Alliance will playthe Dundee Football Club of Scotland Tuesday at Balboa Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Dundee won the premier soccer league in Scotland this year.

The U.S. women’s volleyball team will be at three South Bay high schools Tuesday to help generate support for the U.S. team, which is based in San Diego. Eight players will give demonstrations in assemblies at Southwest at 11:30 a.m., Mar Vista at 12:30 p.m. and Marian at 1:45 p.m.

The Dennis James Pro/Am Celebrity golf tournament will be next Thursday and Friday at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Celebrities Leslie Nielsen, Fred MacMurray and Tom Poston are expected to play. Spectators will be admitted free.
