Irvine : Iowa Sciences Academy Honors UCI Professor
Howard M. Lenhoff, a professor of biological sciences at UC Irvine, is a recipient of the Distinguished Fellow Award from the Iowa Academy of Sciences.
Only 20 Distinguished Fellow Awards have been made by the Iowa Academy of Sciences in its 111-year history. Past winners include James Van Allen, who discovered the earth’s radiation belt that now bears his name.
Those named Distinguished Fellows are scientists who have international reputations for scientific research and the promotion of science and who have connections to Iowa. Lenhoff was a magna cum laude graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1950.
Lenhoff, who lives in Costa Mesa, has spent 30 years researching the freshwater hydra. Hydras are small, soft-bodied water creatures with a tubelike body and a mouth surrounded by tentacles.
Lenhoff also is a recognized authority on 18th-Century Swiss biologist Abraham Trembley.
