Garthorn, ridden by Rafael Meza, rallied on the outside with a strong stretch run Monday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., and won the $299,500 Metropolitan Mile in 1:33 3/5, equaling the second fastest time in the history of the race.
It was the fifth straight victory for the 6-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Believe It-Garden Verse. Love That Mac finished second, beating Lady’s Secret, the only filly in the race, by a nose. Turkoman, the favorite of the crowd of 30,165, was fourth.
Garthorn paid $9, $5.80 and $3.80 and earned $179,700. Love That Mac, with jockey Eddie Maple, returned $9.20 and $5.60, and Lady’s Secret, with Pat Day, returned $3.80.
The track and stakes record is 1:33, set by Conquistador Cielo in 1982. Garthorn equaled the stakes time of Gold And Myrrh in 1975, Carry Back in 1962 and Bald Eagle in 1960.
