Ordinance Would Restrict Smoking
The City Council recently set in motion a proposal to regulate smoking in city-owned buildings, but it has rejected a broader proposal to regulate smoking in all public areas and places of employment.
By unanimous vote, the council told the city staff to draft an ordinance that would create separate smoking and non-smoking areas in city buildings and to begin negotiating with city employees to implement such restrictions. A public hearing is set for June 10.
Councilman John Cioffi asked that the council chambers be the first considered for designation as a non-smoking area.
“There are loudspeakers in the lobby so it’s not like we’d be excluding employees and other smokers from the meetings,” Cioffi said.
