55 Cuban Refugee Criminals Riot on Way to U.S. Prison
About 55 Cuban refugee criminals, accused of spearheading a violent demonstration at the Krome detention center, rioted aboard a caged bus today while being transported to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta.
Authorities said 40 officers, carrying riot clubs, subdued the Cubans after the bus pulled to the side of Interstate 75 near Lake City about 7:45 a.m.
Officials said state police and local law enforcement officers aided guards, who followed the bus in cars, in quelling the disturbance. The prisoners yelled, banged their handcuffs on bus cage and tried to rock the vehicle, officers said. Some of the men got free of their cuffs. There were no reported injuries, officials said.
The men were said to be among the most dangerous criminals in the Krome detention camp in Miami and participated in a melee by 125 detainees Wednesday night.
Officers returned the prisoners to Krome, searched and re-handcuffed them and put them back on the bus for Atlanta at 10 a.m.
